I drew this ages ago. The idea was just to blow off steam making a comic, have the basics of the story figured out, and then to just draw it without planning or script. I drew this way for exactly one evening and then abandoned it. There are other, more fun ways to blow off steam, like drawing fanart & silly things, not depressing post-apocalyptic comics.

Yeah so this was gonna be a comic about a guy & his kid trying to make it across a devastated USA to meet up with his wife, but then shizz happens. I wrote the original story for this back when I was in university, like 10 years ago and I wanted to be a writer when I grew up.

Hey guys, I did a massive blog post about turning Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong (my most recent graphic novel, currently being serialized online) from a prose novel into a graphic novel (the photo above is one of my oh-so-pristine thumbnails). You can read about the whole thing here!

Shiro and Rat.
Sigh. These kids are so hard to draw, and they still don’t look right; their design still isn’t hitting my sweet spot. Designing characters for comics is hard and so important, and often I don’t think people take it as seriously as they should. The way your character looks defines who they are and how the reader responds to them. Designing characters for comics is different from designing them for animation (there are some factors you don’t have to take into consideration), but it amazes me when people don’t take the time to make their characters work visually on the comic page. It’s more than just putting a shirt on a body type, everything we wear says something about who we are and what we want and where we belong as a human being, and comics miss that SO DANG HARD sometimes. Clark Kent’s glasses & suit say just as much about him as a character as his Superman outfit.

Anyway. Some day I will get these guys right. Or die trying.

A very belated Friends With Boys commission. This is why I don’t take commissions outside of a convention setting: it takes me forever to get to them, and I feel guilty the whole time! ;)

Completely unexpectedly, Cris Peter, the amazing colourist behind the colours on The Adventures of Superhero Girl, did this badass neon-lit colouring job on my Raven Boys fanart! Ahhh, I love people with mad colour skills, they are the best!
… I like how Ronan looks even more menacing in colour, haha. XD

I had all of yesterday off, so what did I do? A fanart for Maggie Stiefvater’s very excellent book The Raven Boys! Ugh, what a good book, my favourite of 2012, I think. The Scorpio Races was also pretty spectacular.
I’d like to colour this at some point, but unlikely it’ll be anytime soon. So damn busy … :P

I will never not be embarrassed, despite reaching adulthood many years ago. :P
